Infectious and energizing Midwestern indie pop with a touch of west coast gleam is what you’ll find in Cousin Simple’s latest release. Produced by multi-platinum producer David Kershenbaum, “Honeybee” is very likely the omen of a bright future ahead of the Ohio-bred quintet. Powerful drum hits provide a deep bottom end while sparkling clean guitars add bit of California sun to the mind; and hand claps and gang vocals during the chorus beckon for audience participation. The standout feat in “Honeybee,” however, is Cousin Simple’s remarkable ability to incorporate multiple rhythmic formulas into one song to ensure the listener stays engaged throughout. Four-to-the-floor bass drumming in the verse gives a sense of urgency before the chorus settles in to a chill half-time beat. Then there’s the bridge, where everything’s kicked into overdrive to turn “Honeybee” into a level 10 indie rock dance anthem. You’ll have a hard time believing this one’s only 2.5 minutes!
