Palehound “Black Friday”, is a gentle emotional confrontation on social constructs.

“Black Friday” by Palehound starts off with an atmospheric church organ introduction that paints a gentle landscape for the band to join. Ellen Kempner has a voice with a whisper like timbre as if she is telling you a secret. As the minimalistic guitar accompaniment builds into as pianissimo as a rock outfit can be the lyrics seem hurt and pained while opening up to someone. The dynamics build as she confesses the person she is singing to has broken her heart in many ways prior to this encounter. Layers of vocals join for the chorus as the harmony performs mostly in major with the exception of the iv chord in the chorus which joins in this perfect way that allows only the slightest amount of tension to bring the darkness of the lyrics to life. Be sure to check out “Black Friday” below as well as Palehounds tour dates and an except from Kempner on “Black Friday”.

PRESS NOTES:

Kempner explains the song is, “About how fucked up it is that we’re all conditioned to feel we need to compete against others to get what we want. How success is measured in who you’re above and who you’re below. This one is framed through a specific relationship where you feel like you’re investing more into a person than they are in you, and that you feel you need to compete for their attention and love.”
