Driving indie rock meets the sparkling energy of 80’s synthpop with Only Shadows’ latest tune, “At the Door Knocking.” Written about the anxiety of major life decisions, this track is overflowing with energy. The guitars drive and soar throughout; the drums are receiving the beating of a lifetime; the vocals are strong and gripping; and those synths in the chorus provide a dancelike energy that counterbalances the underlying angst and uncertainty on which “At the Door Knocking” is built. Again, I’ve got to give these guys mad props for their ability to keep the energy on 10 for the whole 4 minutes, with the key change for the bridge/outro providing a wickedly satisfying ending to one of the most fun tracks I’ve heard this month.
