A peaceful nostalgic track about love and loss. As the memory in this song is family related I thought it would be appropriate to share after Thanksgiving.
“I wrote this song with the talented Jessica Mitchell about losing my father to Alzheimer’s and the significance the photographs of him have meant to my family,” says Royal.”
The arrangement is familiar and the production of reverb is something to be admired. Most noticeable for me around 1:55 where Royal and his female back up singer sing “this photograph’ as the guitar panned far left that is doused in reverb abruptly cuts out. Although I doubt the most casual of listeners will not appreciate this level of production it is a defining moment in the song for myself where it became very intimate between Royal and myself. All in all the guitar playing in this tune is very skillful while also being subtle and very melodic. The arrangement is layered with hooks but because the production is so soft it would be more honest to call them treats. “Photograph” is marinated with sweetness and tender memories. Take a moment today to reflect on how much you love and appreciate your family.
FROM THE PUBLICIST:
Photograph is from his brand new EP Love Will Linger – this marks the second release of 2018 for Royal, whose LP Ever After the Farewell came out in April. The album release show in Toronto was one of the last shows at the iconic Massey Hall before it closed its doors for renovations.
“I wrote this song with the talented Jessica Mitchell about losing my father to Alzheimer’s and the significance the photographs of him have meant to my family,” says Royal. “Death comes to us all and the lives lost should be remembered. I’m grateful that I still have the days gone past with my father alive and well in his photographs. I hope this song and video help bring memories of loved ones back to life for others as well.” That contrast of love and loss dominated the entire creative process in making the music for the EP.
