Billy Peake “Manic Waves” an artful lo-fi rock n roll record

As an artist myself I can really appreciate the struggle in finishing a record because you think what’s the point? But when those trumpets kick in on track 2 the title track “Manic Waves” the joy is audible and the energy takes a massive bump. It’s a really fun track that reminds me a bit of some of the classic albums that hipsters flock to from artists such as Modest Mouse or The Flaming Lips, those “before the artist got big vibes, the real stuff”. Probably the better comparison is They Might Be Giants because of the fuzzy fun indie vibes coupled with the brass. Manic Waves is full of fun production bits and bobbles from aforementioned brass arrangements to some reverb soaked high pitched percussion and the motif hooks repeated on each instruments. “Grandad Was a Demon” really sounds like organized chaos with fun little hooks being panned all around stereo. “Annie You’re a Lightning Bolt” is a stand out track for me because of the beautiful duet that takes place between Billy and Amelia Bushell (Extra Special), written for Billy’s daughter and takes aim and ‘glows with tenderness while addressing the misogyny she’ll face,’ a heartbreaking but honest and vulnerable sentiment. The album while probably underfunded and marketed is a brilliant piece of music that is a journey start to finish for those willing to check it out. It’s something I’d imagine I’d buy one a CD at a venue and keep in my 2001 golden Hyundai Elantra and keep in rotation just because the energy is good, the songs are diverse, the sonic qualities aren’t overbearing but it’s a really fun driving sound. Billy has been around the block and active for a very long time in the music scene. If you’re looking for an indie gem check out Manic Waves!
