Alex Bloom’s “First Time” – A sonically documented Journey from LA to NYC
A beautiful and unsettling track.
Alex Bloom’s latest single, First Time, a song about realizing a daydream, marking the beginning of an album-long odyssey. As the opening track of his upcoming album, Across the Country, First Time sonically is mysterious and at first is reminiscent of Alex G. The harmonic quality at points doesn’t lead back to the one chord and with all the modal interchange used it really drives home this massive change from west to east coast.
The song itself mirrors this evolution. The first half preserves the raw intimacy of Bloom’s original demo, a lo-fi bedroom recording captured on his laptop microphone in his cousin’s NYC attic. Then, as the song progresses, it transforms into a lush, fully produced soundscape—exactly as he had envisioned when first writing and demoing it. This shift isn’t just sonic; it reflects Bloom’s personal and artistic growth.
First Time is a beautifully crafted microcosm of transformation, blending nostalgia with the excitement of new beginnings. As the first step into Across the Country, it sets the tone for what promises to be a deeply immersive and personal album. Something really drew me in was the use of slide guitar, they sound like shooting stars.
Stay tuned—this is just the beginning.
